California lawmakers run up 1969 salaries and travel costs

California legislators charged taxpayers 2.6 million for salaries and expenses in 1969. Average pay reached 22,300 per lawmaker with 16,000 base salary plus 25 daily allowances. Travels to Hawaii Mexico and Canada and numerous meetings boosted totals, with several lawmakers traveling widely on official business and several trips reimbursed.

Court awards over seven hundred thousand for jet noise damages

In a 75 page ruling Superior Court Judge Bernard S Jefferson awarded more than 750000 to property owners near Los Angeles International Airport for jet noise damage. The court found 589 parcels valued between 400 and 6000 dollars with final awards to be decided in further litigation. Deputy City Attorney John Haggerty indicated an appeal. Nearly 750 residential owners sought 15 million dollars.

Nixon tours Chicago pollution site amid smog visit

President Nixon arrived in Chicago to study pollution controls and toured the Hanover Park sewage treatment plant as part of a Midwest visit with mayors governors and White House aides. The stop followed talks in Indianapolis on Model Cities crime and pollution and underscored federal efforts to address environmental reform and water reclamation.

Unemployment Rises to 3.9 Percent in January

The Labor Department reports January unemployment at 3.9 percent, the highest since November 1967, with adults and teens most affected. The rise follows a 0.4 point jump from December, amid production cutbacks and a slowing economy under anti inflation policies.
