County planners release box score of preserves acreage

The County Planning Department reports 138 463 acres included in already authorized agricultural preserves. The tally reflects the size of protected farming lands under current preservation programs.

County moves to condemn land for dunes park near Guadalupe

The county advances a condemnation plan to acquire land from Union Sugar Co for a dunes park west of Guadalupe as a 1,500 acre subdivision and coastal development are proposed in the scenic dunes region. Deputy County Counsel Robert Curiel notes a pre trial hearing in Superior Court.

City Council approves housing lease for seniors and more

The council acted on multiple items including approving a resolution for the Housing Authority to lease city housing to private owners and sublease to seniors with federal assistance. A public hearing approved alley improvements under the 1911 Act and set Feb 18 for Mate appeal.

City Council OKs bids for tennis courts library landscaping

City Council approved bidding for two new tennis courts at Ryan Park with an estimated 14 000 and endorsed landscaping the new East North Avenue library with Radometkin Nursery at 17 099. The panel also approved 18 306 for street lighting from E to L Streets and Chestnut to Hickory Avenues and 11 400 to B I F Corp for a soda ash feeder at the water plant.

Obituary notices for Tony Adams and Edward Dempsey

Mass for Tony Adams 38, victim of a motorcycle accident, was held at Vandenberg AFB Main Chapel. Interment at Glendale National Cemetery, Richmond, Va. Adams worked at State side Office Supply. Rosary for Edward Joseph Dempsey 56, dead on arrival at Lompoc District Hospital, will be said tonight at McPeek Mortuary Chapel. Mass tomorrow at La Purisima Church officiated by Father Andrew McGrath. Dempsey, born Chicago May 23, 1912, lived in Lompoc 15 years and welded for Johns Manville Corp. Survived by wife Helen, son Kevin, and sisters Rose Johannes and Florence Ramirez. Interment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.

Boys' Clubs to Host First West Coast Fine Arts Exhibit

The Coastal Boys' Clubs Association presents a one day fine arts show at La Cumbre Plaza Santa Barbara on February 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibits from nine clubs plus Santa Barbara High School and local junior high students will span five age groups with works in sculpture oils pastels silk screen and more. Top entries will advance to the Boys' Clubs of America National Convention in San Francisco April 27 to May 1 with prizes and scholarships awarded by the BCA judges.

Rain Raises Lompoc Valley Total to 13.06 Inches

The Lompoc Valley recorded another third inch of rain with the season totaling 13.06 inches. A motorcycle collision near West College Avenue left 17 year old John Francis Maguire with minor injuries. he refused medical aid.

Domingos Family Seeks Lost Shetland Pony Shorty

The Domingos family on Union Sugar Avenue appeals for help locating their sorrel Shetland pony Shorty, last seen washed away on Union Sugar Avenue amid flood damage. Mrs. Domingos fears the pony may be alive but starving and asks for information at RE 5-2381.

Planners rush plan approval for county master plan

County Planning Department pushes to approve airport and housing elements by end of fiscal year June 30. Public hearings required before Board of Supervisors action. Approved elements join the master plan unlocking funds for airport capital and low cost housing. Airports named include Santa Barbara Santa Maria Lompoc and Santa Ynez with private fields at New Cuyama Carpinteria Valley and Santa Maria.
