Israeli warplanes strike Arab positions in Jordan and Iraq reports clashes

Iraqi and Jordanian accounts claim Israeli jets attacked northern Jordan with 14 planes, two shot down. Jordanian gunners report two planes downed as well. Israeli spokesmen dispute casualties while asserting strikes south of the Sea of Galilee. Reports coincide with Nixon peace efforts as heavy air activity continues.

Village man killed in crash of AF ambulance and motorcycle

A 38 year old man, Tony Adams of 505 Sunbeam Ave Vandenberg Village, died after his motorcycle collided with an Air Force ambulance on North H Street in Lompoc California. Airman 1C Thomas Walter Gagen and Deputy Dale Schade attempted life saving measures but Adams died at Lompoc Hospital. The crash near Lompoc Airport left Adams and Gagen shaken but Gagen survived and was to be released today. Adams had retired from the Air Force five weeks earlier and worked for State side Office Supplies. He is survived by his wife Marianne and three children.

Hickel proposes temporary drilling freeze in federal waters

U S Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel told Santa Barbara County officials a temporary halt on all drilling in federal waters offshore Santa Barbara may be possible while stricter controls are applied. The Board urged immediate cessation amid the continuing oil spill, as winds push the slick away from the coast and crews work to seal the Well.

Hayakawa details student violence at San Francisco State

Acting president I. Hayakawa told a House education subcommittee that campus rioters used violence as a tactic and police were a response to violence. He said about 300 of 18 000 students participated, aided by a small group of dedicated revolutionary faculty.

Nixon orders welfare and education program reviews

President Nixon directed Cabinet officers to propose plans across education and welfare. He asked Finch and Shultz to assess antipoverty reforms and the possible abolition or transfer of the Job Corps and OEO programs. He also urged declaratory aid applications study and city education deficiencies review plus Treasury tax incentive research.

Marines and volunteers repair flood damaged Lompoc bridges

Rehabilitation continues in Lompoc Valley with Marines from Camp Pendleton and Vandenberg AFB building Bailey type bridges across the Santa Ynez River. A 25-truck convoy, 60 Marines, and equipment arrive to install a one-way bridge on Floradale Avenue by February 12, and a two-way bridge on 13th Street by February 25. Aerially deployed advance team coordinates work as farmers seek labor and tools.

Nixon weighs Europe trip ahead of NATO meet

The White House outlined tentative plans for a Western Europe visit within 60 days. Ronald Ziegler said exploratory talks with NATO allies covered scheduling and itinerary as the President aims to complete his first foreign trip before the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Washington on April 10.
