Carter seeks Middle East peace as Sadat upset by Palestinian state remark

President Carter, in Warsaw, says the United States will accept any Egypt-Israel agreement and will not impose a settlement. He may meet Sadat and Begin, and plans a possible Cairo stop if needed. The trip also covers Polish talks with Gierek, translation gaffe, and upcoming stops in Tehran, India, and Saudi Arabia.

Inmates Transferred From Mexico to Lompoc Under Treaty

FCI Lompoc to receive 29 more prisoners under the U.S. Mexico exchange treaty, part of 233 moved so far. About 86 transferees remain in San Diego, with 13 at Lompoc awaiting halfway houses. Most are 21 to 47, many with parole dates in January to March.

Weather outlook with clouds and light showers favored

Considerable cloudiness continues through Saturday with a 30 percent chance of measurable rain today and tonight, then diminishing to 10 percent on Saturday. Highs in the low to mid 60s, Lows mid to upper 50s. Tidal forecasts show multiple high and low tides through Sunday and into Monday.

Churches Host New Year Weekend Services

Government offices close for an extended New Year holiday while markets and some businesses follow holiday schedules. Bible Baptist Church at 1523 W North Ave offers services at 8 p.m with movies and nursery care until midnight. St Marys Episcopal at 209 E Central Ave conducts services Saturday 11:45 p.m and Sunday 10 a.m with a Saturday night prayer and potluck breakfast. The Record prints Monday with its business office closed though circulation runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

VAFB Fire Victim Stable After Dec 20 Brush Fire

Clarence McCauley the 54 year old civilian bulldozer operator remains in serious but stable condition at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Skin grafts are reported successful and kidneys functioning. He regained consciousness but cannot recall the events. The blaze sparked by a downed power line killed Base Commander Col Joseph Turner Jr Base Fire Chief Billy Bell and Assistant Chief Eugene Cooper, burning over 10 000 acres before containment.
