Floods Ravage Gulf Coast as Storms Spread

Heavy thunderstorms triggered flooding across central Gulf Coast states with tornado watch in parts of Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi evacuees number about 100 Christmas floods, with additional flash flood impacts in Laurel Columbus Hamilton Heights and Meridian areas as rain totals rise.

Ferry disaster near Guayaquil blamed on crew and overloading

Survivors of the Jambeli ferry sinking near Guayaquil said the crew were drunk, the ship overloaded, and condemned. About 300 aboard. 143 bodies recovered and 142 survived as naval divers feared more bodies trapped under 25 feet of water in shark-infested seas 36 miles from the port.

Bob Hope spends Christmas at home after 23 years

Bob Hope did not sing Thanks for the Memories to troops for the first time in 23 years. He enjoyed Christmas at home with wife Delores, children, and four grandchildren. Col J Quincy Collins of San Francisco sent a recorded POW choir parody of the theme, which Hope loved and asked for a copy.

First home computer service ends after six months

The In-Touch service by Seattle First National Bank ends as customers lose trust in computers. About 500 users signed up for 100 minutes monthly, paying $6.50, but limited touch-tone phones and costs hindered growth. 300 customers remaining will get free time until the shutdown on December 29.

Skylab 3 astronauts perform seven hour spacewalk

Commander Gerald Carr and pilot William Pogue completed a seven hour spacewalk to photograph Comet Kohoutek and repair a sun study camera while inside observer Edward Gibson tracked progress. Carr praised the view from 270 miles up and the crew took extra rest after the long EVA.

New bombing wave predicted in London

Scotland Yard warned of a renewed terror bombing campaign in London despite a one day Christmas lull in IRA attacks. A spokesman urged the public not to become complacent and to report any suspicious packages at once.
