Early Santa images evolve from saint to gift giver in art

After Clement Moore’s poem, Robert Weir’s 1838 Santa portrait shows a gnome like figure with a pipe and sword, altering the saintly image to a mischievous gift bearer. Curator Joan Gorman notes the painting helped shape the later red suited Santa while tracing Santa’s origins to St Nicholas born around 280 in Europe.

Youngster charged in kin's death in Kansas incident

A 13-year-old Kansas boy faces a murder petition after allegedly shooting his 10-year-old brother during a dispute at a relative's home in Whittier. Police say the older boy fired a .22 caliber pistol to frighten his brother. the weapon discharged, striking the younger in the neck as he uttered a final plea. The case is with Juvenile Court.

California Weather Brings Rain Across the North and Central

A weather system off the coast continues showers across northern and central California with partial cloudiness in the south. Heaviest rain fell in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Valley, with six hour totals reaching up to 2.37 inches at Mount Shasta City and 2.37 inches at Blue Canyon.
