Fire kills Col Turner and two others at Vandenberg AFB
Col Joseph G. Turner Jr and two civilian firefighters Billy J. Bell and Eugene G. Cooper died in a blaze traced to Space Launch Complex 5 at Vandenberg AFB. Turner was base commander and led firefighting efforts before his disappearance with Bell. Two other firefighters were injured and civilians Clarence McCauley and Edgar Alvarez were hospitalized. Public memorials were planned as investigations continued.

A wildfire at Vandenberg AFB scorched over 10 000 acres and menaced SLCs 3 4 5 while winds 70 to 80 mph hampered containment. Firefighters including Col Joseph Turner Jr Fire Chief Billy Bell and Assistant Chief Eugene Cooper died surveying the flames. two firefighters were seriously injured and civilians were hospitalized.
County water workshop ends without key bond election data
The County Water Agency board wrapped a two day session led by chairman Robert Hedlund without the crucial information on bond funding elections. William W. Kramer was unable to attend due to illness. The board will await reports from Kramer and Victor Subbotin to guide decisions on a potential November 1978 bond election for State Project water.
