47 Lot Subdivision Clears in Santa Maria Area

County environmental clearance was granted Thursday for a 47 lot subdivision 1% miles south of Santa Maria Public Airport. Developer Mark J. Smith claimed no substantial environmental impact on 16.7 acres west of Orcutt Expressway. Noise from the airport was not deemed significant due to quieter engines and improved procedures. Smith pledged insulation to reduce plane noise and new housing near the airport. Environmental Specialist Albert J. McCurdy postponed final ruling from December 5 to review water use amid an 8,500 acre foot annual groundwater overdraft.

Record's Fifth Scholastic Christmas Chess Tourney Set

About 300 youth players from as far as Santa Ynez are expected to compete in the Veterans Memorial Building for the Record's fifth scholastic Christmas chess tournament. Prizes will be awarded at elementary junior high and senior high levels. Registration opens at 8 30 a m with first rounds around 9 a m.

Lompoc Valley YMCA Director Dan Morse Resigns

Dan Morse resigns as general director of the Lompoc Valley YMCA to become program director at the Laguna Niguel YMCA in Orange County. The resignation takes effect January 6 and a replacement is being sought through the national YMCA. A possible merger with the Santa Maria YMCA is discussed. Morse joined Lompoc Y in October 1971 from Copley YMCA in San Diego.
