Three additional candidates joined the March 7 city election field pushing tentative candidates to six. Denise A. Marshall and Deianna E. Buroker, both of 717 W. Ocean Ave., took papers Thursday, and Jeffrey D. Day, 317-B North K St., followed Friday morning. Incumbents Lefkowitz Stevens and realtor Tom Green had already filed papers, with Mayor Benton undecided. City Clerk Wilma Thomas said none has filed official nomination papers yet for the three open council seats.

Power Shutdown Planned Saturday in Lompoc

VAFB Big Brothers Give Toy filled Christmas Party
Vandenberg Air Force Base hosts its annual Big Brothers event for 200 underprivileged children from Santa Maria Lompoc and Guadalupe. Boys and girls aged five to ten will enjoy a three hour party at the NCO Club with magicians a tumbling act and a visit from Santa Claus who brings six toys per child. Each child also receives groceries a turkey and dinner supplies and a pair of shoes plus socks. The event costs about 18000 dollars funded by fundraisers and community groups including a charity softball game and contractor donations.

Inmate Shot While Trying to Escape at FCI
Wayne Thomas, 20, an FCI inmate from Pittsburgh, attempted an 8:55 a.m. escape by scaling rear fences at Vandenberg. He was hit in the left hip by warning shots and is in good condition at Vandenberg AFB hospital awaiting surgery. Edman said he had been in an initial 60 day study and observation before sentencing for a savings and loan robbery and was admitted Dec. 2 under FCI custody.
