Lompoc council members condemn a LEDA letter urging continued funding as a defensive misstep. Councilmen Valencia and Ward fault its tone and warn there are alternatives to LEDA. A joint public meeting between LEDA and the council is directed.
Lompoc City Council unanimously approves 309000 in 1977 78 block grant funds to rebuild the fire station while seeking Public Works Grant Act money as a possible substitute. If approved most 368000 in 78 block grants would fund senior citizens facility storm drain and other needs.
OPEC opened a crucial meeting in Doha with Saudi Arabia urging a six month freeze on prices while other members push for increases up to 25 percent. Sheikh Yamani opposed an immediate rise citing weak world economy as ministers begin discussions on price revision.
Fourth District Judge J. Robert Bullock set Gary Gilmore's execution for January 17 at Utah State Prison, rejecting his bid for immediate execution. Gilmore argued the 60 day rule was violated and criticized the judge, who held the 30 to 60 day window resets with each new date.
The City Council approved paying the undisputed portions of October and November PG E bulk power bills. Lompoc will cover 107 118 of 139 442 for October and 129 886 of 167 501 for November, withholding the differential in an interest account. The move follows attorney recommendations from the Northern California Power Agency amid disputes over PG E bulk power rates.
Lompoc Unified School District trustees vote to spend 226,807 from a special reserve to build a new auto shop at Lompoc High School and purchase equipment for Cabrillo and Lompoc High programs. The plan includes engine work and a fundamentals classroom, with support from principal Robert Paisola and staff.
A suitcase time bomb exploded at Baghdad International Airport in the customs lounge killing at least three and injuring hundreds. Iraq accused Syria of involvement with Damascus as the blast damages the terminal and crowd. reports cite victims from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, West Germany, Japan, and Greece among others.
A House Select Committee report concludes no Americans listed as missing in the Vietnam War are alive. It notes more than 2,500 were unaccounted for and recommends a raiders force to exploit intelligence on captured personnel. Some members dissent, urging continued work for progress on POW MIA accounting.
