Viet withdrawal ahead of Nixon's schedule

UPI reports the Phase 5 troop withdrawal in Vietnam is complete three weeks early, with 343,700 U.S. troops remaining, below the 344,000 Christmas target. An additional 7,000 are to depart by Dec. 31, while peak American strength reached 543,400 in April 1969.

Nationwide seasonal weather report notes near normal temperatures

The nation sees near normal seasonal temperatures with sparse precipitation. Snow flurries appear in the Great Lakes and Northeast while a band from Southern Wisconsin to Central New England records 5 to 15 inches, Massena New York holds 24 inches, and rain dampens the Pacific and Gulf coasts. An ice storm hit Northern New Jersey causing wire and tree damage.

Nixon advisers split over unrest problem

President Nixon and his Commission on Campus agree government fuels student disorders. Meanwhile Northwest Airlines plans to resume full service after a five month strike ended with a contract granting a 37.9 percent wage rise over 39 months. BRAC members at Northwest voted overwhelmingly to accept. Full schedule to resume in four to seven days after operating at 25 percent capacity since July 8.

Bomb Explodes Outside GE Building in New York

A pipe bomb exploded early today outside General Electric Co offices in mid Manhattan. A Puerto Rican nationalist group claimed responsibility. A nearby pedestrian was hit by debris, with no other injuries reported and only minor damage due to a heavy steel curtain at the entrance. Police received a call from someone claiming the line, General Electric is going to be blown up this is MIRA.

Trail to murder suspect by sheriff nears ending

Sheriff's homicide officers planned to question a suspect in custody in another jurisdiction about the slaying of a young woman found on a roadside south of Lompoc. The case has lingered for more than a year as investigators pursue a link between the bloody interior of the suspect’s car and the scene and search for identification of the victim known as Jane Doe. The former sheriff, now retired, warned the case might never yield a definitive identification.

Hughes faces corruption probes prompt Hughes retreats and firings

Time magazine reports that federal tipoffs to potential corruption in Howard Hughes Nevada empire spurred a Bahamas retreat and firing of several employees. It notes plans to sell Las Vegas hotels and surrender Air West to regain control of TWA, while Maheu leads dubious Nevada operations and private investigators probe Hughes Tool Co. and Nevada figures.

Chavez seeks broader boycott against Bud Antle produce

Father Kills Police After Forcing TV Station Off Air

Roy Edward Spencer 59 was shot and killed by police after he held CKPG radio and TV staff at gunpoint in Prince George B C demanding his son Brian Spencer play on television. He claimed there would be a revolution in Canada as officers tried to disarm him.
