Union rejection extends Johns Manville lockout in Lompoc

The International Chemical Workers Union Local 146 rejected Johns Manville Products Co. latest contract offer by voice vote at Lompoc High School. About 413 of 500 workers signed in, with leadership instructed to seek a negotiated exit from the impasse and to drop demand for a two year deal in favor of a three year pact. Pickets remained outside as the lockout continued.

Johns-Manville to seek 75 percent cut in county pollution

Johns-Manville Corp. facing a public hearing January 8 before the County Air Pollution Control District board seeks leniency on its pollution reduction schedule. County director John English notes J M has missed a milestone but likely to reach final 1975 targets with scrubbers and controls. Miguelito Canyon plant remains the county’s largest pollution source emitting about 2 500 tons yearly versus a 600 ton final goal. Grefco’s scrubbers already meet standards, while new northern county plants face a stricter 25 ton cap per pollutant.

Home building leaders urge Ford for quick purchasing power

National Association of Home Builders president Lew Cenker and leaders met with President Ford to urge action on consumer purchasing power. They cited worsening conditions since September, high mortgage costs, and a frozen federal aid program for low and middle income home buyers. They asked to lift the mortgage aid freeze to spur housing and jobs.

OPEC raises crude oil price effective Jan 1 1975

The OPEC meeting set a new crude oil price at 10.46 dollars per barrel starting January 1 1975 and froze it for nine months. Iran's Interior Minister Jamshide Amouzegar announced the increase from 10.15 dollars, with industry officials noting it may reflect the market price rather than a real rise.

Saxbe resigns to become India ambassador nomination

President Ford nominates Attorney General William Saxbe to be ambassador to India to succeed Daniel Moynihan who has resigned. Saxbe's AG resignation takes effect upon successor confirmation or his own confirmation, whichever occurs first, while Levi and Eastland-Hruska speculation looms. Moynihan plans Harvard return after two years. Levi to retire Chicago presidency in 1976.

Brooke proposes 20 cent gas tax hike and car weight tax

Sen Edward Brooke calls automobiles the energy crisis cause and proposes a 20 cent per gallon gas tax and a weight based car tax. He would abolish the Federal Aid Highway Trust Fund and fund highways from general revenue, with a poor relief credit for those earning 15560 dollars or less.
