Bids Expected on Lompoc School Building Projects

The Lompoc school board will open bids tonight on three construction plans totaling about 409 777 dollars. Plans show fourteen homemaking building sets priced at 104 700 dollars and ten sets for plastering the Hapgood high school auditorium estimated at 5 077 dollars.

Air Force to Start Camp Cooke Missile Training Base

Maj. Gen. B. A. Schriever announced that construction of a missile training center at Camp Cooke will begin in March or April. The base will become a permanent Air Force installation with several thousand personnel and an initial build-up reaching up to 500 residents by year end.

A free eye clinic for residents of Lompoc aged 40 and older opened at noon and will operate until at least 6 p m this evening.

Police Action Averts Gang Fight

A planned gang confrontation was stopped by police on Sunday night. Twenty three local youths were booked cited and released to their homes with officers, before any fighting occurred.

County 5 Percent Offer on Tax Withdrawn

On a 3-2 vote the Board of Supervisors withdrew its offer to invoke a uniform sales tax law with cities paying over five percent of their revenues to the county government. Santa Barbara refused any share, while Santa Maria and Lompoc agreed to the five percent split.

Water Tests Show No Salt Intrusion in Lompoc Valley

Tests of valley well water over twenty years show no appreciable rise in salt content. Conducted by U S Geological Survey and Agricultural Extension Service, the results were reported to the Lompoc city council during a joint meeting with the Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District.

Mercury Dips to 26 Degrees Then Rebounds in Lompoc

In Lompoc this week the temperature fell to 26 degrees on two consecutive mornings, turning poinsettias from scarlet to purple to grey. The following day the low for the 24 hour period rose to 52 degrees, with the week’s average high at 65 and average low at 34.

Soil District nominations close for Lompoc election

Nomination papers for the Lompoc Soil Conservation District election are due tomorrow. Directors Tilden Brughelli and William Larango’s terms expire. Papers are available from the Soil Conservation District office or the county clerk. If no more than two candidates file, the Board of Supervisors may declare nominees elected without an election.

Concert for PTA Meeting in Lompoc Monday Night

A Christmas themed concert will open the Lompoc Parent-Teacher Association meeting at 8:00 p m in the elementary school auditorium. Students from the elementary Hapgood and high schools perform under faculty in charge Mrs Eleanor Clark Clarence Winden Mrs Hulda Kapp Jer and Maurice Mercer. PTA president Robert Lower will preside and a nominating committee will be elected. Refreshments will be served by fifth grade mothers.

New Tenants May Rename Camp Cooke

Maj. Gen. B A Schriever said new tenants will likely give Camp Cooke a new name, though details on the desired name and timing remain uncertain. He noted the old name may be kept if local sentiment opposes a change.

Two Resignations from City Planning Commission

Robert C. Lilley and Fred Small resigned this week from the City Planning Commission. Lilley will begin county supervisor duties the first week of January, and Monday was his last planning board meeting after joining in 1948 and serving as chairman since 1950. Small said his resignation stems from planning a move to Santa Maria. The commission continued reviewing the new city zone law. See Page 2.
