Controls Lifted for Promise in Auto Prices

The Cost of Living Council ends wage price controls on the auto industry in exchange for a pledge by GM Ford and AMC to limit 1974 compact car price increases to 150 dollars and not raise vehicle prices again during the model year. California leaders all pay California income taxes

UPI reports that Nixon and California’s political delegation differ on state tax status. Senators and 43 congressmen say they pay California income taxes, while Nixon paid none from 1969 through 1972 due to domicile in D C, per White House and state law.

Cold weather spreads south with frost and snow

United Press International reports a wave of cold air dipping into the Deep South with snow reaching North Carolina and Tennessee. Temperatures hit freezing as far south as northern Florida while frost is forecast in interior central Florida. Light snow blankets New York state and the Appalachians. heavy snow warnings issued for Buffalo area and travel advisories for western Pennsylvania. Skylab 3 Crews Photo Kohoutek Comet and Vandenberg Launch

The Skylab 3 crew led by Carr Gibson and Pogue faced an 18 hour day including sun watching two medical tests and a Defense Department Minute Man missile launch from Vandenberg AFB. They will photograph the comet and Crab Nebula after the missile shoot.

Kissinger Sees Better Understanding After NATO Talks

Grand larceny tied to Nixon white house probe

A congressional subcommittee alleges Dr. Thomas Matthew mismanaged over 1 million in SBA and federal funds in 1971 as part of a Nixon era black capitalism pilot. An SBA audit found grand larcenies and the file went to Justice, but no federal charges followed. Matthew was later convicted in New York on Medicaid mismanagement counts.

Shopper's guide ranks San Francisco banks on loans

The San Francisco Consumer Action group released Break the Banks, a 63 page shopper's guide showing loan costs across 17 banks vary by more than 100 percent. A $700 unsecured loan ranged from $49 to $101.60 with limited cooperation from banks and regulators.

Woman Marine to Lead Male Troops at Pendleton

Col Mary Bane age 44 named to command Headquarters and Service Battalion at Camp Pendleton California starting January 15 making her the first woman Marine officer to lead male troops in the 198 year history of the corps. She will head 2150 Marines and say she is overwhelmed to break the barrier. The move follows the commandant Gen Robert Cushman Jr dismissing rules that discriminated on sex.
