Bokassa Crowned Emperor In $30 Million Central African Gala
Former French paratrooper Jean Bedel Bokassa was crowned emperor of the Central African Empire in a lavish ceremony costing about $30 million, with 2,000 guests, a rose petal procession from France, a grand banquet, and a throne shaped like an eagle. Empress Catherine, 27, and the 2-year-old heir Jean Bedel George attended as cannons boomed and Parisian imports furnished the coronation.
