Mills may lose chair to illness and scandal

Speaker Carl Albert said Rep. Wilbur Mills likely will remain chairman of the Ways and Means Committee despite rumors he may resign due to exhaustion and a reported relationship with a stripper. Mills, 65, hospitalized for a complete examination, awaits doctors’ guidance as his wife Polly visits and Annabel Battistella plans a bedside visit.

Fourth body sought in SLO light-plane crash

Searchers scoured a hillside south of San Luis Obispo for the fourth victim of a collision between a Cessna 172 and a Piper Cherokee in heavy rain. The Piper pilot was a 27 year old Salinas man. authorities would withhold names until all four victims were identified.

Haldeman denies planning with Nixon in 1973

Haldeman testified under cross examination that he did not plot with President Nixon in 1973. The Watergate figure said discussions about preemptive disclosures or discrediting John Dean’s testimony were not plans to cover up. The trial centers on conflicting accounts of a March 21 1973 meeting.

Inmate killed as guard fire halts escape at FCI

An inmate, Donald R. Satterfield 27, was shot and died after scaling fences during an escape attempt at the Federal Correctional Institution. A second prisoner escaped but was captured near the FCI sewer plant about 10 a.m. today after tower guards fired in the pursuit.

Major storm batters Lompoc and county flooding roads

A late night storm drenched Lompoc and surrounding areas with high winds and heavy rain, flooding H Street and the Santa Ynez River drainage. No serious injuries were reported as authorities opened roads, noted minimal property damage, and logged several minor collisions.

City delays water and garbage rate hikes for one month

Lompoc City Council unanimously voted to pause proposed rate increases. Staff will study halving an 80 percent water rate boost and trim garbage collection costs from $2.50 to $3.50, with hearings moved to January 7.
