President Nixon will deliver detailed information to Congress and the public addressing charges about his finances and taxes. aides say he will also propose surrendering his 1.5 million San Clemente property to the government after he and Mrs. Nixon die.
Four unions rejected a contract offer and a statewide strike began at 12:01 a.m. affecting more than 60 supermarket chains and about 100000 workers from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. Initial targets include Safeway Lucky and Thriftimart with warnings of wider lockouts if one company is hit.
Ronnie Eugene Fleming 18 suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right arm and was treated at Lompoc Hospital and released. Steven Alan Cannaday 25 was jailed on an attempted murder charge after a dispute over a girl led to a shooting in the 200 block of North K Street, where police say a .32 caliber pistol fired three shots.
The Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors voted 4 to 1 to raise salaries from 14 224 to 24 041 annually about 69 percent. The raise would take effect in 60 days if approved by the Cost of Living Council and not blocked by voters. Several supporters spoke including Robert Hunt Royce Lewellyn and Herman Farnum. Frank J. Frost opposed seeking a public vote.
