Historic San Marcos Pass Era of Toll Roads to Modern Traffic
The San Marcos Pass known as Highway 154 evolved from a toll road with 1869 rates of 1 dollar for one horse and vehicle to a modern scenic route linking Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley. Early travel required six hours, stages with six-horse teams, and frequent horse shoe wear at stations, while today improvements cut travel to 35 to 40 minutes and the pass supports a bedroom commuter pattern.
