California School Finances Show Heavy Local Tax Reliance
California school districts rely on local property taxes for the majority of their funding with state aid composing most of the rest. Local taxes account for about 56 percent of district revenue, while state funds total around 39 percent including direct and indirect aid. A taxpayer revolt is noted as property tax levies have risen sharply over the last decade. In the prior year about 4 billion dollars funded public schooling in the state with 2.4 billion from local sources and 1.6 billion from state aid. Record carrier Ryan Fraser led a weekend reader-signup surge for the Record, bringing in 16 new subscribers.
