Hoax bomb threats reported to local stores in Lompoc

Lompoc police say phone bomb threats were made to Moore Mill and Lumber Co. at 320 N. D St and to Penney’s in the Lompoc Shopping Center on North H Street. Both threats turned out to be pranks, authorities stated.

Security Pacific names J B Averitt Solvang branch manager

J B Averitt, longtime Santa Barbara County resident and former Vandenberg Village supervisor, is appointed manager of the Solvang branch at 1714 Mission Drive. He succeeds Robert H. Baehr, who transfers to the Los Angeles head office with commercial loan duties after leading the Solvang branch. Averitt previously ran the Turnpike Center, and held roles at Vandenberg Village and Lompoc branches. He joined Security Pacific in 1962 after 22 years in the Army Air Corps and Air Force, retiring as a chief master sergeant in 1961. He and his wife Mary Gray Williams reside on Alisal Road in Solvang with three sons.

Air Force tests Minuteman III missile at Vandenberg

The Air Force began shakedown launches of the Minuteman III ICBM from Vandenberg AFB. A Strategic Air Command crew launched the 76,000 pound, three stage solid fuel vehicle down the Western Test Range at 2 a.m. EDT. The missile, intended to replace older models, has a range beyond 7,000 nautical miles and speeds over 15,000 mph.

Man Held in Kidnap of Judge's Daughter

Sheriff's officers arrest a 22 year old former Florida resident in connection with the kidnapping of a judge's daughter. The suspect is in custody as the investigation continues.

Six held on narco charges in two cases

Police confiscated heroin and marijuana and arrested six people in two narcotics investigations. Juvenile Hall took the 16 year old wives of two men. The suspects face narcotics, paraphernalia, and dangerous drugs charges with varied bail. A separate kidnapping case in Santa Barbara led to the arrest of Michael Fogle, identified by a child in a lineup, with motive suspected as molestation. Agricultural scientists in Davis claim a tomato shaped like a hot dog could fit mechanical harvesters.

Army aids search for wedding ring in clover field

Capenhurst England UPI reports the army will assist Norma Sampson, a newlywed wife of a soldier, in locating her wedding ring lost in a clover field. A mine detector expert will conduct the search on Sunday. An Army spokesman said the force is happy to help a soldier's wife.
