Tropical Storm Doria Aims at Wilmington N C

The nation’s weather centers note Tropical Storm Doria with near hurricane winds and heavy rain heading toward Wilmington North Carolina. The National Hurricane Center projects landfall near noon with gale winds around 70 mph and tides 3 to 5 feet above normal. Elsewhere mild conditions prevail from the Midwest to the northern Rockies, while the Southwest and Southern California see near 90 degrees. Thunderstorms drenched Akron Ohio with over two inches of rain and Detroit traffic stalled when the Chrysler Freeway flooded to roof height during rush hour.

Gun used by Jackson traced to outside San Quentin

San Quentin warden said the gun Jackson used in the escape attempt was traced to a source outside the prison. Nine attorneys visiting inmates alleged beatings and claimed Jackson was set up to be murdered, with officials denying this. State officials and lawmakers planned to visit to review conditions at the facility.

Hughes Must Face Nevada Officials Over Casino Restructure

Gov. Mike O’Callaghan said Howard Hughes must appear in person or send a verified letter to push changes in Hughes controlled Nevada casinos after the State Gaming Commission denied a restructuring plan for seven properties. The panel demanded Hughes’s personal input or a face to face interview before any reapplication.

Progress in dock strike talks on West Coast efforts

Negotiators from the Longshoremen's union and shippers met privately for a third time in as many days amid hopes for progress in the West Coast dock strike. A Treasury Department notice announced a new 10 percent import surcharge on cargoes unable to unload due to the strike, effective Aug 16.

Soledad Brothers pretrial hearing erupts in San Francisco

Surviving Soledad Brothers faced seven defense motions as a disrupted hearing paused after rioters and spectators clashed with riot police behind a bullet proof barrier. Mrs. Doris Maxwell, mother of John Clutchette, shouted obscenities prompting arrests and a bailiff removal order while officers cleaned blood from deputies. The session resumed with Judge Carl Allen denying the motions.

Russia may gain military technological superiority

UPI reports Dr. John S. Foster told the House Appropriations Committee that the Soviet Union is increasing its military R&D budget by about 3 billion dollars annually, with a 40 to 50 percent larger program than the United States. He warned of potential surprises within two to three years as Moscow shifts funds from space to military tech.

Watson case rests as Grogan trial halted by threat

UPI reports the state rested against Carlos Tex Watson in the Tate-LaBianca killings while Steve Grogan’s trial paused after defense counsel received a threat by phone. Deputy DA Bugliosi read 47 witnesses in Watson case. Watson’s defense prep resumes next Tuesday.
