AFS student from Brazil joins Opp ranch family
Marilise Paraizo 17 arrives from Belo Horizonte as Santa Ynez Valley’s 1976 77 AFS exchange student living with the Charles Opp family on Ballard Canyon Road. She will study at Santa Ynez Valley High School and take courses in oceanography and government while enjoying knitting, dancing, and horses.

Community plans a 7 p.m. Friday potluck at Ballard School under Ballard Improvement and Protective Assn sponsorship with 83 attendees last month. A Los Olivos Grange Hall flea market drew a large crowd and brisk sales to support Grange programs. The 2nd annual Santa Ynez Valley Farm Bureau Center chicken barbecue is set for Sept. 4 at Nojoqui Falls Park with corn tomatoes frijoles and French bread. Painted Cave Cycling Club sponsors two days of races in Solvang and Los Olivos Ballard Oct. 2–3, with Solvang Centurion Oct. 2 7 to 11 a.m. and Tour de Santa Ynez the next day from Los Olivos to Roblar to Refugio to Baseline. The Santa Ynez Day celebration hosts a June barbecue in Santa Ynez Park. Nearly 70 members and guests attended a Juliette Room dance at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton last Friday night.

Crime prevention program inspires Ballard residents
Deputy Reg Willison of the county sheriff's crime prevention center led a Ballard Improvement and Protective Assn meeting on home and business protection. Joe McEnulty Phil Willis and Pilar Ramallo joined from the Santa Barbara sheriff's explorer post to discuss the center at 5778 Hollister Avenue Goleta. The event featured a crime prevention display, an instructional film on locks and security devices, and a public viewing of engraving tools and owner identification stickers. A key segment included a recorded exchange with a longtime burglar detailing entry methods.

Danish Days Grand Prize Offering Trip to Denmark
The Santa Ynez Band of Indians invites the public to an open house at the new $135,000 community building on the Santa Ynez Reservation. The grand prize includes a 22 to 45 day Denmark stay for two with all expenses paid by SAS and $800 cash, offered during Danish Days. Funds come from the American Revolution Bicentennial Project.
