Lilley Spends More Than Hedlund in Primary Campaign

In the Fourth Supervisorial District race, Robert C. Lilley spent 21648 to win a playoff spot, more than twice Robert Hedlund's 10452. Lilley’s total helpers included 10711 during May 25 to Aug 5. Hedlund’s 10452 plus 3014 in the same period. Contribs show Lilley raised about 24000, while Hedlund and White reported multiple sizable donations from Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez, Lompoc, Solvang, and nearby communities.

Ford calls for four post-Labor Day debates

President Ford proposed four face-to-face debates with Jimmy Carter on defense domestic foreign and economic issues. Each debate would last up to 90 minutes starting after Labor Day with a first session reportedly set for September 28 in St Louis and negotiations to be handled by Ford aides in Washington.

Senate votes down bid to restore full congressional control of postal service

The Senate rejected Sen. Hollings proposal to end the Postal Service’s semi independent status. It would have placed the service under annual congressional appropriations, abolished its board, and had the president appoint the postmaster general. The plan would have moved back to direct budget control in 1978 with a $1 billion subsidy through 1977.
