The Labor Department reports July cost of living up 0.4 percent, the sharpest rise in five months. Food prices, especially meat, drive the jump with a 1.2 percent grocery store rise and meat, poultry, fish up 2.8 percent. Nonfood prices hold steady while services rise 0.3 percent.
Nelson Rockefeller and New York’s delegation promise a floor fight at the Republican Convention if big states do not win a larger share of delegates. The 88 member New York delegation voted unanimously to press for change, aiming to keep the party centrist amid liberal pressure from larger states.
A premature bomb explosion at the Green Hills customs post near Newry killed seven people, including two attackers. Six others were wounded, with at least one more extremist among them, as the attack became the latest failed guerrilla operation in three years of Northern Ireland conflict.
The County Taxpayers Association backs auditor Floyd's 13.9 cent cut in the county property tax levy while Tax-Action Association questions the figures. The Board of Supervisors delayed adopting the new rate of 3.46 dollars to allow evaluation of Floyd's statement. Chet Knutilla said the figures are fine. Joseph Arend urged a review.

North Vietnamese tank led assaults at Quang Tri Citadel were repelled by South Vietnamese marines with heavy losses. In Da Nang area 7,000 ARVN moved toward Que Son and near Base Camp Ross, while U.S. bombers hit armor and artillery. One F4 was shot down over Quang Tri with crew lost, another damaged. ARVN claimed 31-34 Communists killed in later fighting, with some prisoners and wounded.
The Beautification Commission, by a 5-1 vote, moves to draft a letter to the County Planning Commission opposing MI light manufacturing zoning for the Hogg Brothers property on County land east end. DMG design manufacturing is urged as the appropriate industrial zoning to avoid spot zoning and protect unified planning.
