County Auditor-Controller Paul E. Floyd recommends reducing the 1972-73 property tax levy to 3.46 dollars, a 13.9 cent cut. The Board of Supervisors considers the measure with a one week delay granted to allow further evaluation by the Tax Action Association.
North Vietnamese forces moved tanks and 130 mm guns within 15 miles of Da Nang, threatening the U.S. air base and coastal areas as Que Son fell. U.S. and South Vietnamese air forces targeted the formations and guns, reporting several weapons destroyed. In Phnom Penh an assassination attempt on Cambodian PM Son Ngoc Thanh failed, wounding four bodyguards. In the Central Highlands a bus strike by a landmine killed 48 and injured 42.
In Miami Beach the Republican National Convention formally renominated President Nixon and Vice President Agnew. Delegates pressed McCloskey’s bid by excluding New Mexico's pro-McCloskey delegate, ending dissent on the floor. Agnew’s stance fuels hopes he could win the 1976 nomination amid conservative support.
John Ehrlichman said President Nixon and top aides stay clear of a GOP convention rules clash that could steer the 1976 convention toward liberal or conservative lines. The Rules Committee met five hours before the opening as it sought a compromise on representation of key states, with a second meeting planned after the opening session.
Lee Duke Bluntsley, 25, of Los Angeles, inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, was stabbed to death during a movie in the auditorium. A nine inch shiv was recovered. FBI probing. no suspects named. Bluntsley, jailed for marijuana violations, had a prior parole violation. He died at 10:50 p.m. at Vandenberg Base hospital. The showing title was Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion.
President Nixon and national security adviser Henry Kissinger spent the weekend in discussions on Vietnam policy. Kissinger flew to Camp David after arriving in Washington from Paris talks with Hanoi's Le Duc Tho and Saigon's Nguyen Van Thieu. Secretary of State William P. Rogers cautioned there is no firm settlement date, while Nixon signed a $1.6 billion disaster relief bill for Tropical Storm Agnes victims.
A three year-old Lompoc girl lost three toes in a freak bicycle accident near her home. Candice Friar, 3, was treated at Lompoc Hospital and released. Several other weekend crashes injured five adults along Highway 101 and in Buellton and Lompoc, with victims transported to Santa Ynez Valley Community Hospital and Lompoc Hospital.
