State Department asks funds to counter terrorism abroad

The State Department told Congress it expects more assassinations and kidnapings of American diplomats overseas and seeks funds to form emergency action teams, armored vehicles, and extra Marine and local guards. It cites prior attacks and hostage crises to justify a $1.25 million request for three teams and security upgrades.

Kennedy warns unemployment could rise amid wartime to peacetime shift

Treasury Secretary David M. Kennedy cautioned that the current five percent jobless rate could jump during the Vietnam War to peacetime transition. He opposed wage price controls and urged deficit cutting to avert recession, saying the economy should be steered in the traditional manner. He acknowledged unemployment would rise as defense cutbacks continue.

Manson takes stand in Tate murder trial

Charles Manson testified in Los Angeles as a motion to stop harassment by the sheriff's department was argued. He described jail treatment as humiliating, and the testimony delayed the trial’s progress as prosecutors presented grisly evidence from the Sharon Tate residence, including victims and a daubed pig sign.

Thunderstorms sweep nation with heavy rain and hail

Thunderstorms drenched large areas bringing heavy rains and gusty winds. Colorado Springs saw nearly three inches in six hours, Lewistown reported 69 mph winds with no damage, Salisbury measured about 1.5 inches, and Burlington area hail fell up to half an inch.

N Howard named to Huntsville Project post at ITT

Neil W. Howard an eight year ITT veteran is appointed to manage the Huntsville Project for NASA support at Marshall Space Flight Center. The announcement was made by Dana Denison, ITT vice president for NASA activities. Howard previously led the Product Assurance Organization in the Western Test Range Division and has been active in Lompoc community groups.

No VAFB road closures planned in emergency

Col Hammond of the USAF told Citizens for the Preservation of Lompoc Surroundings there are no plans to close Vandenberg Air Force Base access roads during national emergencies. He called for maximum transportation and communications availability while the group also discussed Harris Grade freeway plans and the old Huerto Mateos Rancho site.
