Dodgers edge Cubs as Ferguson’s ninth inning homer seals win

Joe Ferguson delivered a two run shot with two out in the ninth off Rick Reuschel to lift the Dodgers over the Cubs 2-1 and widen their NL West lead over the Reds to 2 1/2 games. Reuschel carried a no hitter into the eighth before Ferguson’s decisive blast.

Wadkins edges to win and eyes Nicklaus clash

Lanny Wadkins, 23, won the USI Classic at Pleasant Valley by two strokes over Rik Massengale Tom Jenkins and Lee Elder. He rose to fourth on the 1973 money list with 188,914 and declared goals of four tour wins and a head to head match with Jack Nicklaus.

Foreman skipping contract signing for Sept. 1 title defense

World heavyweight champion George Foreman refused to attend the Tokyo contract signing for his first defense against Joe King Roman. Foreman stayed in his hotel room while trainer Dick Sadler signed, citing plans to meet Roman only in the ring. Roman's camp expressed hope Foreman would attend.

Palmer Wins St Paul Ladies Open In Record LPGA Crowd

Sandra Palmer of Fort Worth Texas edged Jane Blalock by one stroke to win the St Paul Ladies Open at 10 under par 209. Blalock shot 70 and Judy Rankin tied for second at 210 as a record 13,500 fans watched the final round and nearly 30,000 attended the three day event. Palmer earned 4500 dollars for the victory.

Gil takes second in Henderson Dam 10 mile run

Ray Gil of Lompoc clocked 62 03 in 84 degree heat to place second in the 40 and over division at the Henderson Dam 10 mile run. The 48 year old defeated 21 rivals and his Seniors Track Club finished second in the overall team standings among 212 competitors.
