Five cars and two trucks burn in Ventura 101 crash
Eight people died and ten were injured in a chain reaction on US 101 near the Ventura County area as fuel tanks ruptured and a tractor trailer plowed into wreckage. Traffic halted for hours while seven fire units battled the gasoline blaze. The coroner later said identities were unavailable due to body condition.

Four Powers Continue Talks on West Berlin Fate
U S Ambassador Kenneth Rush and colleagues from Britain France and the Soviet Union recessed after more than 14 hours of talks on the future of West Berlin. Rush said there was real progress and that the four powers would meet again Monday to review all points at issue and seek assured access along land corridors and continued ties to West Germany.

Helicopter frees inmates from Mexico City prison
Two prisoners fled Santa Marta Acatitla in a blue helicopter landing inside the jail. Joel David Kaplan, 41, a New Yorker serving 28 years for manslaughter, and Venezuelan Carlos Antonio Contreras Castro, serving seven years for counterfeiting, are at large as authorities arrest prison officials. The helicopter vanished off radar near Mexico City International Airport and a full search is underway.

Court cites Bible in suppressing marijuana evidence
An appellate court ruled evidence against Charles Raymond 32 a state rehabilitation officer was obtained illegally after his son turned over marijuana found in the dresser. The court held the search violated the Fourth Amendment and cited the Biblical commandment to restrict government intrusion into the family home.
