County water well ordinance faces farmer opposition
Lompoc Supervisor Francis Beattie criticizes the proposed county health department rule to require permits for private water wells citing potential crop losses and permit delays. The measure backed by the state aims to protect groundwater quality, with review by farm, cattle, and water groups before a late September or October board vote. Beattie favors modifications allowing checks on new wells without setting construction standards, while fellow supervisor Curtis Tunnell has not yet reviewed the proposal.
