Picket Clashes Turn Fatal in California Farm War

Nagi Baifullah, 24, a UFW picket from Keene, died in Bakersfield of head injuries from an altercation with police outside a Lamont tavern. Violence on the picket lines followed when a farm hand fired on UFW demonstrators near Earlimart, with Cesar Chavez’s son Fernando narrowly avoiding injury. Chavez attended as a legislative observer.

Suit claims devout mother becomes sex hungry after sauna burn

The lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court alleges Maria Ebelia Parson a 46 year old mother of eight developed two personalities Maria and Betty leading to multiple affairs after a sauna burn at Holiday Health Spas. Dr. Deane Denton testifies the split occurred post injury and affects her marriage. A jury trial was scheduled for Oct. 29.

Senate Passes Noise Control Office and Fire Safety Bills

The Senate approved several measures including creation of a state Office of Noise Control to assist local and state agencies with abatement programs and a high rise fire safety regulation bill. Other actions include correctional officer training, exclusionary rule changes, department reorganizations, welfare reform provisions, and a $20 million Tahoe land purchase to curb overdevelopment.

A multimillion-dollar bill to increase aid payments and add benefits for California's aged, blind and disabled welfare recipients advanced in the Senate after winning approval from the Senate Committee on Wednesday.

California earthquake plan warns of heavy losses by 2000

A state Division of Mines and Geology report estimates up to 50 000 deaths and 21 billion dollars in damage in California from earthquakes between 1970 and 2000. It notes past quakes killed 1 020 and caused 1.1 billion in damage since 1812, and highlights San Andreas and Los Angeles area scenarios plus potential dam failures.
