Service news reports Electronics Technician Third Class Christopher C Hutton of Lompoc serving aboard the USS Leahy as UNITAS-X naval exercises with South American nations proceed. Also listed are Air Force Captain Thomas S Brandon of Lompoc at Webb AFB and Sergeant William C Toll of Buellton deployed to Nakhon Phanom Thailand, with ROTC graduate Lee William Merideth of Lompoc preparing for Cal Poly architecture studies. A separate item from Muncie, Indiana notes Charles L Wine robbed of $43 and stripped, seeking help after being found naked by motorists.
Two Vandenberg officers are among 200 named by the Air Force as Outstanding Transportation Officers for fiscal year 1969. Lt. Col. James W. Tate commander of the 4392nd Transportation Squadron and Capt. Stephen G. Oakley director of transportation for the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division will receive a certificate and congratulatory letter for outstanding proficiency in transportation duties.
Beth Elkins of Santa Barbara County is officially entered in the Maid of California Pageant to be held during the State Fair at the California Exposition. She will arrive in Sacramento August 21, join other contestants for a 2:30 p.m. rehearsal, and attend hosted meals before the Aug. 22 opening. Last year’s winner was Jerry Lyn Milliken of Tulare County. the winner earns a $1,000 savings bond and wardrobe prizes.
Vice Admiral Charles K Duncan announced the 24th annual national competitive examination for the Regular Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps will be held on December 13. The program funds tuition uniforms and books while cadets study at civilian colleges, plus a $50 monthly subsistence allowance for up to four years. High school seniors and graduates should apply by November 14 via counselors recruiters or the Santa Maria Navy Recruiting Branch at 203 W Church Street.
A sample of area residents will be included in a nationwide survey of employment and unemployment conducted the week of August 17 by the U S Census Bureau. Warner Williams, a 22 year old gravedigger from Bebington England, vows to sail to the Scilly Isles this week to arrest Prime Minister Harold Wilson on treason charges. He says Wilson violated a civil rights rule in seeking European Community membership, claiming the Brussels Council is above sovereignty. A lawyer says the attempt could proceed but fate rests with magistrates.
