Cypress girls down Lompoc to win Colt 9-11 softball crown

Local Cypress girls beat Lompoc A 10 7 to capture the Colt 9-11 softball tournament title. Desiree Johnson earned the win allowing 10 hits as Leslie Mangum took the loss with three hits and three RBI. Lompoc stars Carol Gonzales and Robbie Downs added batting pace in a busy weekend of action across multiple squads and tournaments.

Local men's softball results roll across league play

Chapel Alan ousted First Baptist 6 4 as Ellis Drake four hitters and a 10 hit effort led the win. Greg Thorson Ellis Drake Fred Scott Walt Prew John O'Brien provided key singles while Quent Best and Jim Grafton led First Baptist with multiple hits. Mission Hills defeated First Southern 6 4 on Bruce Purdue four hitter with Richard Lightner two triples and Gary Vick triple and a single. First Southern top performers included Robert Beattie two singles and Ron Kinney triple. La Purisima knocked Calvary 16 2 behind Ed Granados four hit outing. John Terrones two hits Steve Terrones a triple and two singles. Dave McIntosh and Mike Terrones three singles each. Calvary's Tony Frank doubled and singled with Gary Brandt doubling.

NFL Players OK Cooling Off Period For Camp Start

The NFL Players Association and representatives in Washington agreed to a 14 day cooling off period allowing veterans to report to camp beginning Wednesday. The move aims to speed contract negotiations with the NFL Management Council as clubs fill rosters with free agents ahead of veterans’ return and weekend exhibition games.

Village Country Club hosts July MGA golf results

Lou Martinich shot ten under par 62 to win low net in July MGA at Village CC. Hugh Dalfey was runner up with 54 and John Sherman 65. Steve Cutts claimed low gross with 72. Other Village lines include Friday Seniors foursome net 59, Saturday and Sunday best ball results, and mixed competition winners. Local man to compete in NRA championships

George Honore of Lompoc will compete in the 1974 National High Power Rifle Championships. NRA events run August 11-18 with over 100 individual and team events across Smallbore Rifle High Power Rifle and Pistol. The championships attract more than 3,000 competitors and include junior shooter courses and an Police Instructor School.
