Lompoc Council Approves Eight Percent Electric Rate Rise

Lompoc city council ended a five hour session with an eight percent electric rate increase and a 25 cent rise in refuse collection, while approving the first reading of a 2.50 monthly residential refuse fee. The vote on electricity was 3-2 and 4-1 on refuse.

Jules Berman owner of El Capitan Ranch seeks two parcels in Lompoc Valley to be made agricultural preserves. Public hearings set for Aug. 18 by the County Planning Commission at the Santa Barbara Engineering Building. Parcels total 309 and 134 acres located near Jalama and San Julian Roads.

Gaviota Pass Realignment Studied by State

State Highway officials announced studies on realigning the southbound lanes of U S 101 in Gaviota Pass due to frequent serious and fatal crashes. District Engineer E F Gregory said the stretch is part of both the California Freeway and State Scenic Highway Systems and that construction will stay within the existing right of way. The San Luis Obispo office will work with county road officials and seek suggestions to aid the study.

Lindsay switches party as mayor may seek 1972 bid

New York Mayor John V. Lindsay left the Republican Party and registered as a Democrat saying the country needs new leadership. He stopped short of declaring a presidential run while noting his term as mayor ends in 1973 and he would not resign. He criticized the Nixon administration’s handling of poverty and urban issues.

FBI custody three suspects after hijacking a luxury yacht 95 foot Kamaku 250 miles southwest of Honolulu. United Farm Workers Boycott Extends to Washington

Cesar Chavezs United Farm Workers Organizing Committee pushes a consumer boycott of Heublein Inc products in Washington and extended to 40 cities. Jose Gomez says 10 organizers target Italian Swiss Colony Wines and Smirnoff Vodka as 75 percent of workers want UFWOC representation.
