Nolan Ryan of the California Angels and Roger Moret of the Boston Red Sox both had no-hit bids come apart late. Ryan carried 8 1 3 innings before Dick Allen’s infield single as Chicago won 2-1, while Moret’s no-hitter lasted 72 2 3 innings before Pedro Garcia’s single. Rick Burleson drove in the lone Red Sox run in a 1-0 win over Milwaukee. Royals beat Twins 7-5 with Amos Otis driving in the deciding run. A’s defeated Rangers 8-4 behind Reggie Jackson’s three-run homer. Yankees edged Orioles 4-3 as Sandy Alomar delivered the deciding RBI. Tigers topped Indians 3-2 with Al Kaline notching his 2,960th career hit.

Lompoc Yearling All-Stars defeated Sepulveda Dodgerettes 6-2 in the San Fernando Valley Softball Invitational. Jan Jeffers and Mary Villalobos pitched a two hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk. Terri Cruz had two singles as Lompoc scored three first inning runs on walks and sacrifices.
