Lompoc Council OKs funds for PG and E rate hike appeal

The Lompoc City Council approved 957 dollars to join a 20,000 dollar NCPA fee for intervening in and seeking a five month suspension of a 15.6 percent rate increase proposed by PG and E. If granted, the measure could save the city about 45,000 dollars while increasing annual power costs by 108,000 dollars.

Cyprus truce shaken by Turkish artillery barrage

Turkish forces blasted northern Cyprus in a major violation of the eight day truce driving Greek Cypriot defenders to retreat. In Nicosia President Clerides to reshuffle his government for political reasons as Greece Turkey and Britain seek cease fire lines with U.N. patrols. A Canadian U.N. soldier was mortally wounded in the fighting as snipers fire in the capital. The heaviest clashes since the Geneva cease fire followed a U.N. observer helicopter over the embattled coast. The Greek Cypriot national guard fled along coastal roads after their trucks and armored vehicles were hit.

Lompoc Trustees Cut Half of Proposed Tax Increase

Lompoc Unified School District trustees trimmed the planned $1.08 tax hike by 50 cents bringing the new rate to $3.27 with $2.35 general fund. last year was $2.69. They also approved various budget measures including school vacancies policy, athletic equipment gifts, and a driver education simulator lease.

Weather Outlook for Coastal Area Mostly Fair Through Thursday

Weather forecast calls for mostly fair conditions through Thursday with low coastal clouds and fog inland at night and morning. Temperatures remain stable with highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s and coastal highs in the 60s. Lows tonight in the 50s, with northwest winds up to 20 mph in the afternoons. Tidal times show high tides at 1:08 am and 1:55 pm, and low tides at 7:13 pm and 8:27 pm.

Lompoc Building Volume Rises Sharply in Calendar Year

Through July 31 the city issued 21 building permits totaling 101 374 dollars, lifting calendar year construction to 3 791 584 dollars, nearly double the year before as of this date. The fiscal year first month shows 101 374 dollars versus 184 538 dollars for July 1973.
