Gunman in Santa Maria office siege wounded. officer shot

Authorities investigated a gun and bomb incident at a Santa Maria lawyer’s office on Broadway. Harvey Roberts, 60, was critically wounded after exchanging fire with Santa Maria officer Daniel Shiner, who was shot in the shoulder. Lawyer Buddy Jacquith and secretary Sharon Falsetti aided the escape of another employee. A pipe bomb component and black powder were found in Roberts’s box.

Village plans roller skating rink on Vulcan Dr tract

County Planning Commission approved a tentative map for a 3.32 acre Vandenberg Village tract on Vulcan Dr about 180 feet east of Constellation Road. The plan designates a commercial overlay in a residential area with district shopping center as the General Plan, fronting Constellation Road and Vulcan Dr. The middle lot would host a skating rink with two other lots sized for unknown future uses.

County seeks new rules to curb destructive brush fires

County commissioners discussed authorizing work sessions by fall to address wildfires caused by brush buildup in La Purisima Mission area and Vandenberg Village. They noted current rules limit burning and hinder disposal, proposing input from fire departments Forest Service and air authorities plus possible permit and control burns when risk is low.

Pair arrested in alleged kidnap plot in Santa Barbara

London H. Manar and Patricia Jane Bullock were arrested and booked on conspiracy to kidnap a Santa Barbara businessman. Authorities say the pair planned kidnapping robbery and murder with additional targets. Bail set at $200000 for Manar and $5000 for Bullock. arraignment planned today.

Rec elements in plan face panel vote on park fees

The county considers a recreational element to the General Plan enabling a park fee on subdividers to fund miniparks. Deputy County Counsel Susan Trescher says donations alone won’t suffice, as the commission learns that state policy restricts compulsory lot donations. Developer Tesene cites over $11,000 in extra costs and favors a per lot payment to a county park fund if a universal policy is created. Commissioners Adam and Sain support the idea.
