Progress Seen in Effort to Ease State Sales Tax Burden

Sacramento lawmakers report progress on reducing the increased state sales tax but warn no quick fix is ready. Senator Ralph Dills and a six member negotiating panel considered four or five options and favored delaying all or part of the tax increase. The conference committee met twice behind closed doors and said some progress was achieved while Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti was absent.

Farm workers clash with deputies in California

In Lamont a clash occurred between 275 UFW pickets and sheriff deputies resulting in six officers and several strikers injured. Deputy Carroll Clendenon broke an arm. rocks were thrown and about 30 protesters were arrested as CHP closed roads.

Senate approves open meetings bill and amendment

Legislation to require public openings for most Senate and Assembly meetings passed the Senate by 33 to 2 and 28 to 3, sending the proposed constitutional amendment SCA6 and SB278 by Sen. Donald Grunsky to the Assembly. The measure would keep most legislative proceedings open unless the body votes to close specific meetings.

Orientation for teachers scheduled in Lompoc district

A four day orientation program for teachers in the Lompoc Unified School District begins August 28 at multiple sites. New teachers receive a breakfast and luncheon with district and local education leaders while top administrators attend briefings. Activities include classrooms setup, professional workshops, a golf tournament, factory tours, a bicycle tour, and a cruise to Anacapa Island.

Farm labor bill revived in California Senate

The California Senate voted 30 to 1 to revive Sen. George Zenovichs farm labor bill after a June 28 committee defeat by one vote. The measure would allow secret ballot union elections, extend unemployment insurance to farm workers, and require 60 day notices amid ongoing labor disputes and strikes. Cesar Chavezs United Farm Workers Union and the California Federation of Labor opposed the bill.

Association seeks State pay cut in inflation fight

The California Taxpayers Association urged the Cost of Living Council to reduce state employee pay increases from 11.9 percent to 5.59 percent to ease inflation. Robert C. Brown cited inflationary pressures while farm labor strikes and UFW disputes affected California agriculture. John Henning pledged to draft alternative secret ballot legislation, and Senator Zenovich planned outreach with Henning and allies.
