Compromise reform of welfare approved in California
Gov Ronald Reagan and lawmakers reached a welfare reform compromise after 11 days of bargaining aiming to save about 150 million in state federal and local funds. A $300-350 million tax increase remains likely and final ratification was sought today with October implementation.

Gravediggers Strike Leaves Colma Burials Delayed
In Colma California a three month gravediggers strike has left over 400 bodies waiting in mortuaries. Some burials have been moved temporarily to Oakland or Marin County and later reinterred. Florists and tombstone makers report business declines while families face delayed funerals and neglected graveyards in the city of cemeteries south of San Francisco.

Apollo 15 crew abandon moon camera for lunar eclipse feed
The Apollo 15 astronauts plan to televise a lunar eclipse from their craft after the $115,000 camera mounted on the moon buggy failed. Chief Flight Director Gerald Griffin announced the failure as the crew, returning home, prepared to photograph the eclipse from space. The event, lasting 2:46 p.m. to 5:06 p.m. EDT, will be visible only from outside the United States.

Humid tropical air sent showers and thunderstorms across the Gulf States while cool high pressure kept the north dry from Minnesota to Maine.
