Weekend car crashes injure 15 across multiple incidents

The California Highway Patrol reports 15 people injured in weekend vehicle incidents. Efrain Oseguera 24 of North Street caused a wrong way crash on Highway 1 near Las Cruces, injuring Oliver Graham 43 of Gaviota State Park. Other injuries include Francisco Moreno 19 hurt in Lompoc, and Daniel Schoonover 22 cited for drunken driving after a tree crash on a Santa Barbara road.

Evacuation of Foreign Dependents from Peking After Quakes

Following strong aftershocks near Peking, hundreds of diplomatic dependents fled the Chinese capital. Officials said evacuation was urgent as tremors neared the city, with at least 256 foreigners leaving, many dependents and some embassy staff. Twenty one U S embassy families reached Tokyo on two flights and were told to avoid Peking for a month. A Coast Guard sea search for the pleasure craft Werengain was halted after a Sunday effort found no trace of seven people aboard.

Flood rescue efforts halted by mud and fog in Colorado canyon

Rescue operations in Big Canyon, 45 miles northwest of Denver, were stalled by rain, waist deep mud and fog. At least 60 people died and 260 were injured in the flash flood that swept campsites and structures Saturday night into the river valley.

Pact ready for senior citizen unit

City Council will consider a lease purchase for Knights of Pythias lodge hall on M Street and Laurel Avenue to create a senior citizen center. The five page lease covers Sept 1 1976 to Aug 31 1977 at 875 dollars monthly with option to apply rent toward purchase in first six months and use limited to two lodge rooms per week plus storage. The lease is signed by Knights president Earl Calvert and awaits council approval.

Mystery illness kills Legion conventioneers in Harrisburg

Officials report at least 12 members who attended a Pennsylvania American Legion convention have died and more than 35 are hospitalized. Adjutant Edward T. Hoak cited uncertainty about the illness and noted the deaths occurred over a short period.

Coughlin Sworn to Lompoc Hospital Board Amid Conflict Deal

Dr. Barry Coughlin of Valley Medical Group was sworn in Friday afternoon as a Lompoc Hospital District board member to fill Harold Thompson’s unfinished term. He will supervise cardiology without pay and must terminate his hospital contract for ECG and stress testing. The Valley Medical Group signed a memorandum re directing future remuneration away from the corporation and splitting fees among several doctors. District legal counsel Mike Palmer conducted the oath at a special meeting.

Reagan campaign chief cites ten Pennsylvania delegates

United Press International reports Reagan campaign manager John Sears announced ten uncommitted delegates, ten from Pennsylvania plus one from West Virginia, boosting Reagan in the tally behind Ford. Sears claims more names will be released in two weeks while Ford aides rebut.

PG&E seeks rate hike on wholesale power sales

PG and E files for higher wholesale electric rates to resale utilities and municipal distributors in Lompoc and other areas. The proposal does not affect PG E residential rates and aims to cover current costs and attract capital for new capacity. Affected utilities include Sierra Pacific Power California Pacific Utilities Bay Point and Power, and muni districts Alameda Healdsburg Lodi Santa Clara and Lompoc.
