Steelworkers Strike Hits 14 000 Across Five States

About 14 000 United Steelworkers members walked out at 15 plants in Minnesota Michigan Ohio Massachusetts and other sites in the industry’s first major walkout since 1959. The strike targeted local issues at mining firms in Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula Joseph T Ryerson warehouses in Cleveland and Carnegie Pennsylvania and US Steel electrical cable division in Worcester Massachusetts. A Groveland Mine in Iron Mountain Michigan settled over the weekend and three other Minnesota and Wyoming mines remain under contract extension. A union spokesman offered no details on current negotiations.
