Supervisors to tackle welfare problems in county

County Welfare Department faces growing problems as the Board of Supervisors plans a 10 30 a m session to review relief policies. Welfare Director Arthur W Nelson will update on state care regulations and a Work Incentive Program funding cut. AFL CIO representative Leonard Roders will raise personnel concerns. Nelson reports July state orders reduce W LIN funds to one third of county shares, delaying August and September payments and forcing possible county funding with reduced state support.

Lomax Killed in Car Crash Ahead of Hofstra Residency

The 47 year old author Louis Lomax died when he lost control of his car Thursday night. His body will be sent to Los Angeles for burial. Lomax had been to be writer in residence at Hofstra University this fall and was working on a Negro history grant connection. His book Reluctant African won the Anisfield Wolf award in 1961 and he wrote Negro Revolt in 1962 and When the Word is Given in 1963.

Public hearing on Santa Barbara County agricultural preserve case

Santa Barbara County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing August 12 1970 at 145 pm in Room 17 Engineering Building Santa Barbara to consider John B Wineman cases 70 AP 32 70 AZ 59. Freeway Plan Faces Opposition in Lompoc

Tom Mackie vice-president and project manager of Vandenberg Village opposes a proposed four to six lane freeway from Lompoc to connect with Route 1 and 135. He argues the $7.5 million could fund downtown Santa Barbara USD 101 work and highway 166 improvements and warns the route would ruin Harris Grade scenic area. A citizens group named The Citizens for the Preservation of Lompoc Surroundings gathered 1600 signatures within five days.

Adoption petition pending before Santa Barbara court

Superior Court of California Santa Barbara County cites James K McMullen to appear August 14 at 9:00 AM in Santa Maria to show cause why his adoption petition should not be granted. Deputy Clerk Beverly Pedige notes and Gary J Dunlap represents petitioners from Lompoc with dates listed July 1 and 17.

Exchange cadets visit Vandenberg and Lompoc

A group of 11 foreign exchange Civil Air Patrol cadets and four escorts toured California. The visitors from New Zealand and Japan were welcomed by Lompoc officials and Vandenberg Air Force Base staff. They visited La Purisima Mission and local flower fields, and stayed at the base with a dinner at the Officers Club.
