County faces deeper money troubles and halted payments

Auditor-Controller Albert Eaves Jr. froze about 20000 in warrants delaying transfers and slowed payment of county bills including telephone and power costs. Sheriff and court bills, overtime at the Goleta jail, and district attorneys’ charges add to the strain as April tax funds arrive and bank loan deadlines loom. Washington reports Nixon standing firm against antiwar protests and pursuing China outreach while warning lawbreakers will be prosecuted.

VD Cases Rise in Santa Barbara County and Lompoc

County health officials report VD cases surged almost 60 percent in Santa Barbara County last year with gonorrhea up 55 percent and syphilis up 84 percent. Lompoc clinic increased to weekly sessions since September. Health nurse Mrs. Dunn urges education and reporting to treat partners and prevent complications.

Eight indicted again for kidnap plot in Kissinger case

Federal grand jury reindicts eight people over an antiwar vandalism plan aimed at kidnapping Henry Kissinger. The superseding 10 count indictment adds two new defendants, drops three, and adds 13 overt acts. Named defendants include Rev Philip Berrigan Sister Elizabeth McAlister Rev Joseph Reese Wenderoth Rev Neil McLaughlin Anthony Scoblick Eqbal Ahmad Mary Scoblick John Blick and others. The case follows earlier charges from January and concerns plots against Kissinger and attacks on federal buildings.

Judge denies delay in Amtrak takeover amid protests

UPI reports District Judge Howard Corcoran refused to halt the midnight transfer of most U.S. railroad passenger service to Amtrak. Unions and a consumer group planned immediate appeals, arguing Amtrak's labor protections are inadequate and could harm up to 25,000 workers without severance pay as 101 of 285 intercity trains are to be dropped starting Saturday.
