Viet Nam and U S aid border raid into Cambodia
South Vietnamese forces with U S combat support launched an operation inside Cambodia to destroy Communist bases near the border. U S advisers air support and logistics aid were authorized, with officials noting the raid aimed to clear North Vietnamese Viet Cong bases 35 miles from Saigon. Reagan backs Peripheral Canal with environmental safeguards
The Reagan administration strongly recommended construction of the Peripheral Canal in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to move Sacramento River water to Southern California as part of the State Water Project. The plan faces opposition from conservationists and Jess Unruh, who worry about saltwater intrusion, but Reagan maintains no better alternative exists. The 43 mile canal would be 400 feet wide from Hood to Tracy with a $209 million price tag.
