Labor unrest stalls progress across nation
San Francisco police were placed on alert as city workers threaten escalation of a four week strike over wages. Talks with United Rubber Workers showed little progress while auto workers prepared for a fall strike and union funds brace for September talks. The Commerce Department reported a 0.4 percent March drop in the leading indicators index, the first decline in six months, driven by drops in liquid assets and the average work week.

Brown seeks four year pay freeze for California judges
Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr proposes freezing judicial salaries for four years and basing future raises on productivity. Legal Affairs Secretary Anthony Kline told the Senate Judiciary Committee that after a nine percent rise on Sept 1, salaries would top about 46 thousand for Municipal Court judges, nearly 50 thousand for Superior Court judges, and around 60 thousand for Appeals Court judges. He argued the eight plus decades of automatic cost of living increases have led to the world’s highest paid judges and urged restraint amid a court consolidation plan.
