Senior Citizen Center Talks Advance In Lompoc

The Lompoc Civic Building Committee, chaired by Councilwoman Charlotte Benton, will reconvene at noon Thursday in City Hall to craft a recommendation for a senior citizen facility. The group weighs building anew versus purchasing existing sites such as the Knights of Pythias lodge on Laurel Avenue or the Church of Christ building, with costs and funding from Block Grant and Older Americans Act under review. Public input is welcome, and costs for renovation and accessibility are being evaluated.

Beattie warns county workers no large pay hikes expected

County supervisor Francis Beattie told a Lompoc press conference that salary increases are unlikely this year. Negotiations have produced requests from 3% to 5% while he noted a strike is not a threat, citing a strong labor pool of about 30 000 applicants. Trustees drop plan for fundamental school in Lompoc

Lompoc Unified School District trustees rejected Supt Clarence Bloom's proposal for a fundamental school in the fall. Caribbean jet crash kills 34 in Virgin Islands

An American Airlines Boeing 727 overshot the runway at St. Thomas and crashed into a gas station, breaking up in flames. Forty four of the 88 aboard were injured and four on the ground. Hospital officials report 54 injuries among those aboard.

Appeals court blocks release of campaign funds

The US Court of Appeals refused requests by seven presidential hopefuls to free federal funds for television ads in the primaries. Jury Recommends Roemer Ouster Over Probation Office

The County Grand Jury urged removal of veteran chief probation officer Clifford Roemer and critic W B Matthew in an interim report to the superior court to improve morale and efficiency.
