Bunker to Seek Replacement as Vietnam Envoy This Summer
Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker plans to ask President Nixon to replace him as top U.S. diplomat in Vietnam by late summer. A Johnson appointee since 1967, he credits Vietnamization with progress and intends to retire to Vermont, with consultations in Washington next week and a Saigon return in mid May. He faces resistance to altering ties with Thieu, and will travel via Katmandu to the United States before speeches and a Senate appearance, including a Sylvanus Thayer Award at West Point.

Nixon eyes suburb public housing desegregation shift
Assistant Attorney General Jerris Leonard says the Nixon administration will unveil policy changes to desegregate public and federally supported housing by moving new public housing toward the suburbs. George Romney has long advocated building in suburban areas to offer better neighbors for low income tenants, mostly blacks. Leonard acknowledges possible legal challenges but says suburbs could reserve areas for public housing and reduce government involvement in racial discrimination. He also notes it may not be necessary to pursue new statewide school desegregation suits in the South.
