Fire bomb plot fails as two Isla Vista youths held

Norman L. Harney and Johnson B. Walker, both 20, of Isla Vista, were jailed on arson suspicion after a fire bomb found behind a local business. The pair are also questioned in the UCSB campus caretaker death from a year ago. Police and city officials faced a tense Isla Vista night with clashes over policing and local business security.

Nixon announces plan to bring home 150000 soldiers from Vietnam

President Nixon says the next 12 months will see 150000 U.S. troops withdrawn from Vietnam, cutting total troop strength to about 284000 by May 1971. He asserts pacification is succeeding and warns of strong measures if Communist activity increases. Reaction from lawmakers is mixed but generally favorable.

Lompoc District to Start Drug Education in Fourth Grade

The Lompoc Unified School District will introduce drug abuse education for fourth graders next September as part of health studies. Louise Everett will head the program, with coordination from law enforcement and support from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

Vallejo Official Named Lompoc Assistant City Administrator

Dustin W. Griffith, 28, currently Vallejo’s administrative assistant and personnel director, is named to replace Lou Garcia as Lompoc city administrator's assistant. Griffith will start next Monday at a $930 monthly salary. he previously worked as Vallejo analyst, San Mateo County admin intern in Eugene, Oregon, and earned a Penn government admin masters.

Apollo 13 crew to speak on near death spaceflight

Apollo 13 astronauts James Lovell John Swigert and Fred Haise set for a national TV briefing at 7 30 p m EST to recount the eight day eight day emergency return after an oxygen tank explosion wrecked the mission and delayed Apollo 14. The briefing follows a debriefing with project officials and a board of inquiry led by Edgar Cartwright as NASA vows no further moon landings until causes and fixes are identified.
