Planning Commission extends hearing on M-1-B uses and new design zone
The County Planning Commission voted to continue public hearing to May 30 on removing or adding commercial uses in the M-1-B light industrial district under a conditional use permit. They also plan a hearing on a compromise design industrial district amid debate on pyramid zoning in C-2 M-1-B and PI zones. Commissioner Peter Bratt of Goleta Valley repeatedly amended motions before the final continuation. Opponents from Goleta Valley and Summerland urged restrictions on interim commercial uses during the review.

Exposed Luxuries in University Housing Scrutiny
The article questions public expense policies as University President Charles J. Hitch and other officials receive baronial homes and servants funded by tax dollars. It notes a $276,000 budget for home operations, housing allowances for state college presidents, and a $350,000 Bel Air mansion donated for Chancellor Glenn S. Dumke. Legislative critique cites high salaries and lavish benefits while budgets seek more funds for education.

Retired official questions California lands as federal property
Francis J. Corbett, 65, a former land law examiner for the Interior Department, claims over one million acres of California private lands were wrongly granted and should belong to the federal government. He cites 1,344,570 acres as excessily granted tied to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and says the land revenue could fund national welfare. He awaits an official response.
