MacClure elected Lompoc mayor after secret council vote

Councilman Robert D. MacClure won the Lompoc mayor post by a 3 to 2 secret ballot after an unprecedented closed session. Councilwoman Charlotte Benton was chosen mayor pro tem by unanimous vote. City Attorney James Longtin argued the session was legal under state code.

City executives press for 12 1 2 percent pay raise

Public Works Director William S Barrett led 20 city executives in petitioning the City Council for a 12 1 2 percent pay raise to take effect July 1. He argued cost of living boosts justify the request while last year’s raises totaled about 2 2 percent. Barrett said the group submitted the petition to Administrator Gene Wahlers, and the council referred the matter to budget talks.

U S spy plane shot down by North Korea claims ruled valid

The Defense Department said evidence shows the unarmed EC 121 plane with 31 aboard was shot down by North Korean aircraft while far outside North Korea airspace. Pyongyang claimed it violated their air space. the U S notes debris sightings and no survivors. Soviet ship involvement and debris study were reported as search continued.

Nixon budget cuts meet bipartisan criticism in Congress

Congress voices doubt that Nixon proposed fiscal 1970 reductions go far enough while challenging a claimed 5.8 billion surplus. Lawmakers push for deeper cuts and caps, noting Johnson’s 1969 budget left a 196.9 billion baseline. Labor chief Schultz says programs for the unemployed proceed despite a 4.2 million manpower training cut.

Holmdahl and Thomas win Lompoc school posts in light turnout

DeWayne Holmdahl and Marjorie Thomas, incumbent, top a field of five in the Lompoc Unified School District trustee race. Turnout was about 28 percent with Holmdahl leading in four of six precincts and narrowly ahead of Thomas overall.

Lompoc votes to fund new fire station with existing funds

The Lompoc City Council moves to retire a 500000 bond for a new fire station using the Civic Center Acquisition Fund ten cent and the former pool bond one cent. City Administrator Wahlers says taxes would be unchanged with about one cent needed after using the two funds. A June 3 special election will require two thirds affirmative vote to authorize bond sale for Maple Avenue and I Street site.
