FFA chapter wins top honors at CP field day
The Santa Ynez Valley High School Future Farmers of America chapter earned top honors at Cal Poly Pomona's 26th annual Agricultural Education Field Day. The horse judging team led by Carol Schulz Jo Oberg and Art Mercado finished first with Schulz second and Oberg tenth as individuals. Rick Borg served as an alternate. The ag mechanics team Dana Whitford Keith Weddle and Steve Dunlap placed fourth with Weddle second and Whitford tenth as individuals. The land and horticulture team included Dan Hammer Jeremy Kaslow Bruce Nelson and Steve Diaz as alternate.

Enrollment hike drives Buellton school expansion plan
Buellton Union School District trustees plan a new school site near Flag Hills Estates off Central Avenue as enrollment is expected to rise 80 or more next fall with the completion of the housing project. Evans Jones of Arbogast Jones and Thiess Associates was hired to develop site and facility plans. The Jonata School enrollment reached 383, with a lease purchase option tied to a state June election. The board also organized for the year, naming David FitzGerald president, Marvin Grossi clerk, and R. O. Johnson secretary, and approved a $537,301 tentative budget and re-employment of certificated staff, plus participation in a self-insured workers’ comp program.
